mtbiDo a search for personality types and you’ll be swimming in links of all different types of tests you can take to determine your personality type. You’ll often hear someone refer to a “Type A” personality, or see acronyms that detail a personality makeup such as “ENFJ”. I’ve taken some of them. I am actually an ENFJ, although my score for the last letter was only weighted on the J side by one point. It got me wondering though, how well do those really work? How accurately do they define the real you? In contrast, how often do we fulfill our own personality test? It is easy to consider the possibility that a test tells us we’re a certain way and because it’s planted that seed, we ultimately begin operating more towards that trait than we might have before.

I for one believe that our personalities are not that static. I am an extroverted person, but often times I want and need to be alone. I can sometimes go for weeks with this intense desire to do my own thing. By definition, an extrovert feeds off of being social and wants to be around people all the time. Sometimes I can be Type A, overly organized and anal in an attempt to overachieve. Other times, I’m not that way at all. When I read about Type A vs. Type B, I realize that depending on the situation and the day, I can be either or both.

What do you think? Do you think personality tests hold value? Do you think they can enlighten you about yourself, or do they instead make you believe you’re something that you might not be? Here are some more links to personality tests if you’re interested in finding out how well they work for you. I think whether they of or benefit or not depends on the individual, so investigate for yourself and maybe learn a little bit about yourself in the process.
