boysI have always believed that age is a state of mind. I know 20-somethings that sit around and watch TV all day long, and I know an 82-year old who still comes out to the dropzone every weekend to make a skydive (His name is Jim, and he’s my hero). That is my proof. So, instead of thinking about how old I am in terms of my physical age, I try to look at my youth in terms of my experiences. How I choose to live my life determines my youth, but that doesn’t mean I want to go back to the days of all night keg parties and waking up to strangers passed out in my bathtub (Sadly, this was once my life).

My Mom and Dad split up sometime in 1983-1984. I don’t remember exactly when, but I do remember hanging out at my Dad’s apartment. We watched MTV and listened to Van Halen’s 1984 all the time. It was cool. My Dad was young. Somehow over the course of time, my Dad isn’t young like that any more. He listens to smooth jazz now; he takes bubble baths; and he falls asleep in his chair when we’re visiting… a lot. Don’t misunderstand me. My Dad is and will always be one of the coolest people I know and I love every thing about him. But watching him change as I have grown, makes me wonder: How does it happen? How do you go from jamming out to rockin’ music to living in a perpetual elevator? Can this be prevented, because if so, I want the answer!

Being young is a mindset. It’s thinking more about now, and less about tomorrow. It’s about believing that what is most important is happiness, and not the daily grind, taxes or laundry. It’s so difficult not to get caught up in all of that, I certainly catch myself there all the time. You know what saves me more often than not? My kids.

I look at my kids and I allow myself to be reminded how much fun it is to be young. When we go to our park, I watch them play and fight the urge to yell out, “Don’t get any of that mud on your clothes”. I stop myself because… is mud really so bad? Isn’t it just wet dirt? Shouldn’t enjoyment be more important than whether or not clothes get dirty? Why is it that when we grow up, we forget the little things like this? Maybe it’s because we only see the work involved in cleaning up the mud, or maybe it’s because we’ve forgotten that fun is what it’s all about. Losing sight of “fun” is the same as losing your youth. To me, they’re one in the same. It’s not as if we don’t have fun as grown ups, but instead of fun being priority… being the impetus for every choice we make, it becomes something we do when everything else is taken care of.

Here’s another way of looking at it. If tomorrow was going to be your last day on Earth, what would you do? I can tell you I wouldn’t go to work tomorrow, that’s the first thing. I realize we all have responsibilities to keep, and so you can’t just live everyday like it was your last no matter how great it sounds. But, to recognize the things that you love so much that you would spend your last moments on Earth doing them is like opening a door to your youth. So, what would you do? I would go hiking with my kids and then I would skydive (Yes, I know. Big surprise). Whatever your answer is, figure out a way to incorporate that into your life, and MAKE time for it. Don’t do it only when and if you have available time and money. MAKE it happen.

One other piece of advice that prevents us from staying young- Forget about the end point. Just forget about it. So many people stop doing things they love because they start thinking more about the “end” and less about the “now”. How many people do you know who have given up something they love because they have become overly cautious about protecting their life? I know many. Here’s where skydiving comes into play again. There’s is nothing more effective at reminding you of your impermanence here than jumping out of a plane. It brings the rest of life into perspective. We are all here temporarily; some of us will live to a ripe “young” age, and others may die tomorrow in a freak accident. You never know, so thinking about and trying to prolong the inevitable will do nothing except keep you from enjoying your time here on Earth. You’re going to die… get over it.

So, remember the power of youth. Remember what you’re here for (not taxes or laundry)! I will leave you with this quote. The first part is well known, but it’s been modified by skydivers alike:

I refuse to tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at death, but rather I will skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out loudly proclaiming… WOW What a Ride!!!

So, How Young Are You?

Here’s a great article I came upon today. It was in many ways the inspiration for this post. It’s a Hoot. 25 Signs that Sadly, You’ve Grown Up.

Angelina JolieWhat is it that makes us obsess over the personal lives of the rich and famous? I happened upon some “popular searches” today, and as usual most of them are about celebrities. People want to know about Britney’s custody, Paris’ anything, and of course… Brad and Angelina. Why? Visit a few celebrity blogs, and you’ll find that what people most want to read about is dirt. They want to read all the things that famous people do wrong. Anything that is either completely demoralizing or humiliating is devoured by common folk everywhere. I think it’s sad.

Is it that we feel so bored or so displeased with our own lives that watching someone else’s problems play out makes us feel better? Are we jealous of them, or angry at them for having a life we think we should have? We feed the media and in turn they give us more of what we want. They are providing a service that we’re asking for, and we keep asking for more. You can’t blame the paparazzi, you can’t blame the celebrities (we all do stupid things); the blame lies on us for buying what they sell.

It is to me, no different than a bunch of kids picking on another… only we’re adults so we do it through the media. What would you tell your son or daughter if they came home from school one day and told you how some kids had made fun of them and laughed at them? I personally would tell him/her that those kids had low self-esteem or weren’t happy with something in their life, and so they had to make someone else feel bad to feel good about themselves. I think our obsession with celebrities is no different. It’s not like we pay attention to the good things they do, or even care for that matter. We care about their prison time, their custody battle, their lack of underwear… all the stuff that in our eyes makes them “less”. Ask yourself how much media attention “Brangelina” get about their personal lives vs. how much media attention is devoted to their humanitarian efforts. I’ll admit that both get coverage, but it’s the personal stuff that sells.

Why don’t we feel that these people deserve the same compassion and respect that we would expect for ourselves? Sometimes I think people don’t even consider them as human beings, but rather, objects that can be followed and studied and judged. I know that many would say they bring it upon themselves by being famous, and maybe they do. That said, why should that be an excuse for everyone else to behave badly?

I’m not going to name names, but there are so many blogs out there that are 100% devoted to trashing celebrities, and finding anything and everything negative that’s out there. It sells, and bashing the rich and famous is a profitable venture. It causes no moral issues for anyone, and that’s what I don’t get. How would you feel as a human being if you followed your neighbor around taking pictures of every flaw, blemish and life mistake, and then posted it on the web so everyone could laugh at and dehumanize him? I personally, would feel like shit. But see, somehow with celebrities it’s ok.

This is a symptom of our society. It points to a lack of respect for others, unhappiness in our individual lives, and boredom. There’s no band-aid or fix for this symptom, and I actually think it will get worse before it gets better.

Making Changes by bluskygirl on August 24th, 2007
How is it so easy to find yourself stuck helplessly in a rut of life? One day you wake up, drive to work, do the same things you've been doing everyday for what seems like an eternity and you wonder, "How the hell did this happen"? Is this really what the rest of my life is going to be, because if waiting in the line at the Starbuck's drive-thru on my way to work is the highlight of my day, then something's gone seriously wrong.

I’ve been following the Personal Development Blog list over at Priscilla Palmer’s blog for quite some time, and today I was added to it. For that, I am grateful! It’s a stepping stone to what I hope will be great things for me. I enjoy so much being part of the blogosphere; it has rewarded me in many ways, most of them I had not imagined. For my part, I am to add five additional blogs that I read to the list. However, I find it so complete, that I cannot at this time add to it! Here are the primary personal development blogs that I read (already included in the list), and following that is Priscilla Palmer’s complete list. For all of us who care so much about improving the quality of our lives and the lives of others, we now have more reading material than we could ever hope for!

Agent SmithWhen the original Matrix movie came out, I was all over it. I loved that movie. The plot was so well put together and they had a way to answer everything, like the reason for deja vu, for instance. I actually left the movie after seeing it for the first time wondering if we really were living in the Matrix.

Obviously, I came to my senses soon after but the movie did give me a lot of things to think about. One of them came to mind this morning. At one point in the movie, Agent Smith is explaining the Matrix and how it works to keep us from waking up. He explains that there had been previous versions of the Matrix that had not worked. Why? Because they (the machine’s) made it perfect.

Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through suffering and misery. The perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from. Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this: the peak of your civilization. ~Agent Smith

Hmmmm. There’s something to that, don’t you think? I mean, even if we’re not actually being used as batteries right now by the very machine’s we created, the idea that we define our lives through imperfections and problems has some truth to it.

It’s a common theme; it seems to be human nature to gravitate towards the negative, towards the things that are wrong in our lives. It’s completely reasonable at first glance- I mean, things that are “wrong” need our attention so they can be repaired, while the things that are going well in life don’t require any attention. In the end giving all your attention to your problems only promotes suffering and misery, because all you see is the bad stuff. No one has a perfect life. The trick to making it an abundant life is finding balance between being grateful for the things that are right and identifying the things that are wrong without dwelling on them.

But let’s get back to Smith. What happens when everything is going right in life? What does your mind do? There is this tendency I think to look for something that’s potentially wrong in your life if something’s not staring you straight in the face. For example, your job and family life and all the important stuff are great; there seems to be nothing to be unhappy about. Suddenly, you find yourself pissed off or upset and why? Because the vending machine stole your money, because some guy on the highway cut you off on the way to work, or because you spilled a spot of coffee on your new dress.

We will seek out things that discontent us if we don’t have any major life complications. All these examples… they’re just things. Things that happen to us everyday, no matter what we do. The choice we have is whether to acknowledge them, and if we do, whether we allow them to cause us suffering. While Smith is right, we tend to define our lives by the negative, that doesn’t have to be the case. We can choose, that’s the beauty of being human and not a machine.

So, the next time you’re about to let something or someone spoil your day, ask yourself how much it really matters? My favorite question to ask myself is whether I will care about this tomorrow, or a month from now. If it’s something like a broken vending machine, I’m not going to care about that tomorrow so there’s no sense giving all my energy towards being upset about it.

My last piece of advice: when everything seems right with the world, don’t say to yourself that something has to be wrong, just say thank you.
