<p><a href="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/blueberries.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-569" title="blueberries" src="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/blueberries-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>I&#8217;ve talked a lot about the importance of <a href="http://lifegoddess.com/2007/10/01/5-power-fruits-to-eat-everyday/" target="_blank">fruit</a> and <a href="http://lifegoddess.com/2007/10/04/5-power-veggies-we-should-eat-everyday/" target="_blank">veggies</a> in your daily life and even why we should try to  get <a href="http://lifegoddess.com/2010/09/01/a-quest-for-nutrition-part-3-organic-vs-conventional-food/" target="_blank">organic whenever possible</a>. That said, it&#8217;s easy to go the store and buy it, but it&#8217;s a whole different story to get yourself to eat it before it goes bad.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t tell you how many times I&#8217;ve heard, &#8220;I always go and buy a bunch of produce with the best intentions, but by the time I think about eating it, it&#8217;s already gone bad&#8221;. So, how do you motivate yourself more easily to eat your fruits and veggies? Preparation!</p>
<p>How many times can you recall going to the frig for a snack, seeing the strawberries or cantaloupe but deciding while it sounded good you weren&#8217;t in the mood to have to cut and slice it? If you think about your most common snacks, I bet they&#8217;re all super-easy to come by and required no preparation&#8230; like a handful of nuts or chips, right? I am the same way. Convenience will always trump choice.</p>
<p>So, to eliminate making less-healthy food choices when I want to snack, I make sure that my fruits and veggies are ready to go and right in front of my face if I open the frig. This works for my kids too, for all those parents out there trying to get their kids interested in fruits and veggies. I can ignore a cantaloupe sitting on the counter uncut for days, but if it&#8217;s in the frig and ready to eat, I almost always choose it over something else!</p>
<p><a href="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Pineapple.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-567" title="Pineapple" src="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Pineapple.jpg" alt="" width="280" height="210" /></a>Any kind of fruit that needs prep work- pineapple, melon, strawberries, oranges, etc.- can be cut the minute you get home from the grocery store and put into storage containers. Even fruit that doesn&#8217;t need anything but washing can be washed and stored right away and then it&#8217;s ready to go at any time (think blueberries and grapes). Likewise, to get more veggies, make a &#8220;mini veggie tray&#8221; in a storage container with carrots, celery, cauliflower and broccoli. Add your other favorites too. Again, it&#8217;s the easiest thing in the world to pull it out at snack time; you get a serving of good stuff, and it&#8217;s guilt-free too.<a href="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/veggie_tray.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-568" title="veggie_tray" src="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/veggie_tray-300x191.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="191" /></a></p>
<p>If you make this a habit, then you&#8217;ll find that instead of feeling like you&#8217;re always prepping food, you instead do it one day each week, or a couple days a week depending on how fast you go through your produce. Give it a try, you&#8217;ll find out almost right away how easy it is to get more fruits and veggies into your daily routine.</p>

<p>Since I find myself thinking about and reading about the Paleo Diet so much, I decided to start a new blog, dedicated solely to all things Paleo and Primal! For now, I&#8217;m calling it <a href="http://www.primalexperiment.com" target="_blank">The Primal Experiment</a>.<a href="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/cavemen.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-503" title="cavemen" src="http://lifegoddess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/cavemen-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>The blog will have articles related to nutrition and eating Primal, but will also have a recipe section, where I hope to post traditional recipes that I have converted on my own into Paleo-approved fair.</p>

<p>For Paleo eaters, there is a wide range of beliefs about what we should and should not eat. <em>Note: for those of you unfamiliar with a Paleo lifestyle, jump to the end for some links to my previous articles on the subject. </em>For some, they are die-hard Paleo and follow some of the original rules (e.g. no dairy, no legumes, no grains, etc.). If you follow some of the more &#8220;new school&#8221; Paleo rules, they are a little more lenient, making room for some of the things that we have today that are beneficial despite the fact they weren&#8217;t available to our ancestors. Another reason is that sometimes a strict diet regimen is difficult to fit in to our busy lives 24 hours a day. To be realistic about the stress we put in to our lives, everything we do must be balanced by what we get out of it. If it&#8217;s more stressful and time consuming to figure out how to eat Paleo at your best friends wedding, then it&#8217;s nice to give yourself the freedom to stray from the diet long enough to enjoy yourself!</p>
<p>I happen to fall into the more lenient category. While I avoid the big things like grains, sugar, legumes and dairy about 90% of the time, I still allow myself a few things off of that list because I know enough about nutrition to know that they&#8217;re good for me, and as long as I use my head and eat them in moderation. I also believe that there is value in enjoying life, and that means that tailoring the Paleo lifestyle to my life brings me more enjoyment.</p>

<p>I call the things below my &#8220;cheats&#8221;; however, I wouldn&#8217;t say that they&#8217;re deviating from the primary purpose of the Paleo lifestyle enough to be damaging, as is typical of a real cheat (like a daily hot fudge sundae or something!). It&#8217;s important to make sure that how you&#8217;re eating is balanced (balanced as it pertains to your life, Paleo nutrition is already well balanced) and something you can easily sustain, otherwise it will never be a lifetime change.</p>

<p>So here&#8217;s the Top 5 ways that I &#8220;cheat&#8221; on a Paleo Diet, and why:</p>

<li><strong>Low-carb Yogurt</strong>- a healthy digestive tract is important, and yogurt is awesome to maintaining your health in that area. The problem is (beyond that it&#8217;s dairy), the plain variety is totally unappealing to me, and the flavored variety contains a ton of sugar. So, I went out and found myself a low-carb version. The one I&#8217;m buying is made by Kroger (a grocery-store chain). I haven&#8217;t found any other brands as easy to find; here&#8217;s the specifics: 60 calories, 3 g carbs, and 12 grams of protein. I get the flavor I want, give my digestive system something it needs, and don&#8217;t pay the high-price in carbs. I realize Kroger is not everywhere, so you may have to do some research and see if you can find a store in your area that sells a low-carb yogurt, but it&#8217;s worth the effort. Add some fresh berries to it, and it&#8217;s good enough to be dessert, too. <img src='http://lifegoddess.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' />

<li>Yogurt in my mind is one of the things that while Caveman obviously didn&#8217;t have access to it, it is an obviously healthy improvement to our diet.</li>

<li><strong>Beans</strong>- I eat them <em>very</em> rarely. Maybe once or twice a month if that. While there are some reasons to avoid them completely, they are a great protein and fiber source, and provide a nice meal to mix-up your menu a little. My favorite way to eat them is making chili with grass-fed ground bison (I add pinto and kidney beans). I also eat green beans about once a week. They do not both my digestive system; if they bother yours, I wouldn&#8217;t advise you eat them.</li>
<li><strong>Whole Milk</strong>- while I use dairy sparingly at all times, I do allow myself to have an occasional latte at home, using whole milk only. That keeps the fat content up which slows down the uptake of the carbs. I happen to live with a non-Paleo eater, and with our four little ones, there&#8217;s always milk around for them. This is a pure, unadulterated treat for me. I have no reason to tell you to do it, or reasons why I do or should, other than I&#8217;m trying to balance my overall health goals with my overall life-enjoyment goals. <img src='http://lifegoddess.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>
<li><strong>Nut flours</strong>- Primarily, almond and coconut. You can do some amazing things with them! I have some of my favorite recipes, which someday I&#8217;ll get up here, but some great resources are <a href="http://www.elanaspantry.com/" target="_blank">Elana&#8217;s Pantry</a>, and the <a href="http://www.thespunkycoconut.com/" target="_blank">Spunky Coconut</a>. You can make anything ranging from pancakes to bread to crackers. I typically do not have nut flour baked goods around all the time. I find that if I eat something like this every day, my body begins to crave the &#8220;evil grain&#8221; items that I have avoided for so long. I maybe make something once a month or once every other month.</li>
<li><strong>Cheese</strong>- like blue cheese, for example. <a href="http://www.marksdailyapple.com" target="_blank">Mark&#8217;s Daily Apple</a>, a Paleo Blog that is more in line with my own beliefs on living a Paleo life, has a good article on <a href="http://www.marksdailyapple.com/cheese-unhealthy/" target="_blank">whether or not cheese is healthy</a>. You should check it out. My take on it? I think that for every 8 meals that I can eat without cheese and not miss it, there is one that just wouldn&#8217;t be same without it. My monthly quota of cheese? Probably 3 times a month.</li>
</ol>
